Poker industry I

September 22nd, 2008

The game of poker is a vary old one and has been a popular gambling pursuit of players over the last century and a half in many countries of the world. Comparatively, online poker has been a very recent development. In the age of information and technology, when computers and internet have reached almost every home, the virtual gaming scenario has boomed and more and more players are getting tech-savvy and opting to play the internet version of poker although the games played in traditional casino houses and home have not lessened in interest. Combined with this the interest of spectators in viewing poker games in progress even when they themselves are not participating have led to extensive television broadcasting of such games. Major poker tournaments are now also played throughout the year and sometimes two such tournaments compete with one another in attracting the participants and spectators. The result has been a phenomenal growth in the poker industry with revenue generated at a whopping mind-boggling figure, set to rise in the coming years with quantum leaps.

The establishment and subsequent growth of poker industry has not all been a smooth going. Owing to many legal hassles and other factors, the industry has seen fast growth, periods of lull, slow growth and even a stage of skepticism that whether it was really possible for an industry to grow at such a rate and whether it wont go bust soon. Today’s poker industry, its consolidation and steady progression has laid such doubts to rest. Of course the growth rate of poker industry, in spite of new avenues of internet and mobile phone gaming being explored and taken into account, cannot always develop predictably. But all these factors notwithstanding, poker games in conventional casino houses and also online poker cardrooms (poker games offered in mobile phone applications are still a very new area of growth) have thrived and continue to grow to the satisfaction of an international market where poker industry has carved a niche of its own.
