Apart from the several kinds of bets that are part of the gambling game of poker, there is a small wager that is frequent in pot limit and no limit games known as the post oak bluff. The purpose behind this bet is it works on the principle of trying to steal the pot. Its greatest advantage is that the player placing the post oak bluff wager don’t have to face much risk in terms of the game.

So, if a player is wagering a post oak bluff bet, he stakes a comparatively small amount of money than the pot size, occasionally the bet amount is one-tenth of the pot, and impresses his opponent by the suggestion that he is trying to induce them in placing more dough in the pot. This would imply he has a strong winning hand. When this deception succeeds, other players would rather fold heir hands and quit the game than being lured by the post oak bluff player in playing more and building the pot they think they cannot win. However, if one calculates the pot odds, it turns out to be 11-to-1, and often opponents would not fold even after a post oak bluff bet has been put in the pot unless they are utterly convinced that they cannot win with their hands. On the other hand, since the size of the post oak bluff wager is one-tenth of the pot, the success of this wager in the long run depends on the player winning only once in ten attempts.

Though the strategy is sound, it is mostly considered an example of weak play since the gambler is being over-defensive and too wary of posting a substantial bet. This kind of extreme passive play also does not stand much chance of being a successful bluff play which makes experienced poker players denounce its being used and they themselves don’t make this play part of their game.

In trying to understand the growth curve of the poker industry, it has been observed that poker is an extremely profitable business in the United States and England, with online poker developing in scope and popularity side by side with the traditional games played in real life casino houses. However, the latest market survey sees huge growth potential in markets apart from these two strongholds and Asia Pacific is considered to be emerging markets targeted by the ever-developing industry. As a matter of fact poker has become such a big business that it has entered the corporate threshold and online poker has contributed in this process in a major way.

However, online poker differs from brick and mortar casino houses by the fact here poker games are often played with the gamblers pitted against the house, while in online poker, players compete against one another. The difference of online poker with other multi-billion entertainment industries is that people can end up with more dough than they had when they started, if they play with optimal strategy. This factor has led to the mounting popularity of poker play as every other entertainment outlets leave the patrons losing some cash whereas this offers a chance to gain some money.

It has been a concern for the poker industry to provide potential players with as much information as possible regarding the choices they have in terms of game variants, cardroom selection and tactical play so that they can pick the right alternatives suiting their pockets and play time. In this regard, online poker industry has taken a lead although plenty of reference materials and resources for traditional poker games are also present.

Finally, the boom in the poker industry has invited informed investors to make considerable investment in this market and together with a growing roster of poker players and poker investors, the poker industry is heading for growth in new heights in the imminent future.

The game of poker is a vary old one and has been a popular gambling pursuit of players over the last century and a half in many countries of the world. Comparatively, online poker has been a very recent development. In the age of information and technology, when computers and internet have reached almost every home, the virtual gaming scenario has boomed and more and more players are getting tech-savvy and opting to play the internet version of poker although the games played in traditional casino houses and home have not lessened in interest. Combined with this the interest of spectators in viewing poker games in progress even when they themselves are not participating have led to extensive television broadcasting of such games. Major poker tournaments are now also played throughout the year and sometimes two such tournaments compete with one another in attracting the participants and spectators. The result has been a phenomenal growth in the poker industry with revenue generated at a whopping mind-boggling figure, set to rise in the coming years with quantum leaps.

The establishment and subsequent growth of poker industry has not all been a smooth going. Owing to many legal hassles and other factors, the industry has seen fast growth, periods of lull, slow growth and even a stage of skepticism that whether it was really possible for an industry to grow at such a rate and whether it wont go bust soon. Today’s poker industry, its consolidation and steady progression has laid such doubts to rest. Of course the growth rate of poker industry, in spite of new avenues of internet and mobile phone gaming being explored and taken into account, cannot always develop predictably. But all these factors notwithstanding, poker games in conventional casino houses and also online poker cardrooms (poker games offered in mobile phone applications are still a very new area of growth) have thrived and continue to grow to the satisfaction of an international market where poker industry has carved a niche of its own.

The only way to remain in the poker world is to be a cut-throat go-getter. One of the world’s best poker players, Bob Ciaffone once remarked that poker is just like a war. Poker players are soldiers who are armed with various strategies to outplay and defeat the opponent. If your state of mind is not like this, you are unlikely to stay for long.

The path to success is to choose your starting hands well. If you don’t play tight, you might not have a considerable influence over your opponent. For an all-out confrontation, you need to play about 15 percent of the starting hand. But, what happens if you play even less – say 5 percent?

As you need to give money for blinds or antes, your overhead cost can be more than what you would earn. Hence, statistics show that 15 percent would be the right choice.

The next point to note for a go-getter is the number of opponents in the game. The strategies would vary depending on how many players you would have to confront. For instance, if there are less then three opponents, be a cut-throat aggressor. Play loose and bluff at random. There are only a few chances that you would be caught.

When there are more than three opponents, play a very straightforward game. Be cautious on how the other players are playing the game. Don’t bluff at random. Just like the strength of the army matters, your actions would depend on the number of players with you.

Thirdly, try a new move once in a while. For example, why not re-raise before a flop and without a big pair? This move is eccentric and would be remembered by your opponents. Just remember that this move was basically used to con the opponent. In other words, try keeping your contenders off the balance.

When poker players try to calculate their chance of winning or losing or ending up with a tie in a hand of play by probability or by statistics theory, then the algorithms that are derived are termed as poker calculator. Since poker games have so many variations and set of gameplay rules which are often modified, the poker calculators that are used are mostly statistical devices rather than probability or card counting methodology.

To make an estimate of a player’s winning ratio, the poker odds calculator is employed to find out by dividing the number of winning games by the particular player by the total number of games played by him in a simulating device using Monte Carlo method. A poker advantage calculator can find out not only the winning ratio but also arrive at a normalization of the winning ratio calculated according to the total number of players participating in the game. The normalization value ranges from –100% and +100% in such a manner that if the calculator shows a player’s result as –100%, he will lose the hand regardless of the total number of gamblers and if the result shows +100%, no matter what how many players participate, the specific player will emerge as winner. If, poker relative calculators are used, as found in tournaments or at poker shows, the audience can form an accurate idea of who stands the chance to win in relation to another player’s chances.

A given game situation with the number of players, game variation and cards available to the particular player is required for poker odds and advantage calculators to arrive at their results. However, poker relative calculators is not used by professional poker players since to apply its calculation in the game they would need to know at least two or more players’ hands in the poker game table.
